Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
