Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
